For the most detailed advice: 

 

Take pictures of (a) the masonry you want to match or the color you want to achieve, and (b) the masonry you want to color.  For each, take the pictures from directly in front of the surface you want to capture.  Begin with a distance of about 3 feet, then take a step back and take another picture, then take a step back and take another.  Continue with one or two pictures that show the entire scope of the work.
